Genetic Counseling—The Reason For The Boom in This Field

Genetic Counseling is a Roadmap to Disease Prevention and Quick Treatment of Diseases

According to many studies by the Mayo Clinic, DNA knowledge can and does many times play a factor in determining risk factors for certain diseases in individuals. Just like hair and eye color, diseases through DNA factoring can alert individuals to symptoms that they should be aware of.

Genetic counseling assists with this, as awareness is the first step in prevention and of course, treatment. Genetic counseling, in addition, does play a role in the prevention of passing along certain diseases, for individuals without a genetic history.

Adopted individuals when considering becoming parents, do benefit from genetic counseling, as the decision to bring a “healthy” child into the world is predominant now. Factor in individuals who already know of the penchant for certain hereditary diseases in their families.

Genetic Counseling in Medical Science Ties Into Patient Care

While under the auspices of a physician or while undergoing treatment for a disease, the data obtained from Genetic Counseling is necessary for any team of physicians to validate and provide the best care possible.

Prognoses can be made more effectively with each patient along each stage of treatment. Genetic Counseling is also used to determine the life expectancy of many for decades now.

Medical News Today has studied this for years now and published a manual on the Epigenetic Clock that studies both premature aging and those individuals with a family history of a long lifespan.

The Boom in Genetic Counseling Has Many Reasons a Few of Which Are Listed Above

This is not a field for everyone obviously but the possibilities of making a solid career in this are endless. There is avid interest now even in the power of Genetic Counseling to impact the area of Psychology and Mental Health as environmental factors, nutrition, and of course, DNA disposition towards mental health issues such as Schizophrenia are being explored.

Simple applications of this field exist, such as simple inquiries by individuals into their biological history, especially if they are adopted, and have no real known biological history.

Certain diseases are inherited and adopted by individuals who have no idea of their birth parents and suffer from a lack of genetic history and therefore a lack of disease prevention.

Serious diseases such as cancer, MS (Multiple Sclerosis), diabetes, and heart disease while not always preventable can go unrecognized by individuals with no patient/biological history on which to draw.
