News Update: Vanderbilt, Penn Medicine partner to create and offer continuing education programs for Genetic Counselors

Highlights

The Warren Alpert Foundation (WAF) awarded Penn Medicine, part of the University of Pennsylvania's Perelman School of Medicine, with a generous $9.7 million grant to fund its joint venture with Vanderbilt University School of Medicine (VUSM) and three other institutions. This initiative strives to design and deliver empowering continuing education programs for genetic counselors.

This groundbreaking initiative will be the first of its kind, as no existing formal programs exist to provide continuing education in the field of genetic counseling.

For five years, ten genetic counselors across five collaborating institutions - including Baylor, Northwestern and the University of Washington - will receive salary support to hone their research ability. These select professionals will take part in annual online classes and receive individualized mentorship to strengthen their research competency. Each of the five CEU courses created by this collaboration offers 10 hours of instruction, lectures, activities and assessments on topics in genomics and personalized medicine, with each course granting a single credit CEU.
